FTMW has always been one of my favorite Adams' publications, and this new, enlarged and expanded (and beautifully printed!) edition is a most welcome upgrade. All I can say is, "Wow, this was worth waiting for!" This is a must have book in the Adams portfolio.....now, if only "The New West" got the same kind of upgrade edition!
This book is a re-issue of a Robert Adams classic--first released in 1980, a relatively modest volume published by Aperture. That edition was 11.5 x 9.9 inches with 47 plates, and presented images in double spreads (two pictures facing each other). The book read as a journey westward, beginning at the Missouri river, and ending on the clear cuts near the mouth of the Columbia river, at least roughly suggesting the journey of Lewis and Clark.The new volume is a completely different book--a hefty tome 15.5 x 13.3 inches, with 62 images, printed in quad-tone by Stidel--the most elegant printing Robert Adams work has ever received. Each image is given a spread to itself, and is printed much larger than in the previous edition, roughly the size of a silver print on an 11x14 sheet of photo paper. 27 of the images are the same as in the previous edition, but 35 new images. Even though the title is the same, this is a profoundly new book.On one level, this book seems like a direct challenge to the other Adams--it has the heft of "Ansel Adams at 100". Unlike that tome, however, this book is spare and close to the bone, honest to a fault.I've been waiting, with some confusion for the release of this book--it was first listed probably two years ago on Amazon, with various release dates, but it never seemed to arrive. It appears that very few copies have as yet been shipped to the US, and copies that are available on Amazon are actually being shipped from Germany.While this book has price tag to match it's heft, it is, in my opinion, the best example of Robert Adams work ever printed. Well worth the price.
